The album rode on the momentum of its popular single Creep, considered by many as the anthem for the alternative era. There is much difference in opinion as far the sound of Radiohead during this album. Some critics compared the band's early style to the wave of grunge music popular in the early 1990s—to the extent of Radiohead being dubbed "Nirvana-lite". Others compared them to collection that blends U2's anthemic rock with long, atmospheric instrumental passages and an enthralling triple-guitar attack that is alternately gentle and bracingly noisy.
One thing is clear though, nobody saw what is about to come.
